Because this time I might leave him at the altar

by alda on May 12, 2008

Mindful of the fact that my favourite number is eight, and knowing that we have tickets to see Eric Clapton later this summer, and currently being immersed in Clapton’s autobiography, EPI is delighted to pass on a fascinating tidbit to our YT:

EPI: You’ll never guess: the Eric Clapton concert is on 08.08.08.

YT: No!

EPI: Sure is!

YT: Wow. What a great number. [pause.] Apparently that’s the second-most favourite date to get married on, after 07.07.07. I read that somewhere.

EPI: Yeah?

YT: Maybe we should have waited. [pause] Do you think you could divorce me so we can get married again?

EPI: [thinks] … No.

YT: Why not?

EPI: Because.

YT: Because what?

EPI: It could be a trick.

YOU’LL BE RELIEVED TO KNOW THAT WE SURVIVED THE WEEKEND

It was supposed to be all awful weather this weekend, as in: DON’T LEAVE TOWN IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE. Meanwhile, the weather has been perfectly amicable, even if the sun hasn’t been shining constantly [ok, hasn't been shining at all]. Methinks we Nicelanders are getting so spoiled with global warming and everything that if there are clouds and rain in cards for the weekend, it’s automatically a disaster. It was supposed to be stormy, too … and it wasn’t. In fact there was hardly any wind. EPI and I took a long walk today out by the lighthouse at Grótta [3.52 km, 41.54 minutes, 11:56 min/km pace, 191 calories to be exact, according to my neat little Nike+iPod gizmo] and it was just great. Temps right now are 9°C [50F], wind is non-existent, and the sun is about to go down. Sunrise was at 4.22, sunset at 10.29.

Sorry. I enjoyed the post, and tried to think of something witty to say, but I couldn’t.

alda May 13, 2008 at 12:13 am

Pierre – witty is not a requirement. We take all the comments we can get. ;)

Speaking of weather, what is the best collections of cams from Iceland? I like to look at
http://www.danieldesign.se/icelandrightnow.html
Any other I don’t know about?

It could be a trick.. .that’s so cute! hehe

I think the weathermen need to re-enter all the parameters for their models. They seem to be having a lot of trouble getting it right.

I’ve been thinking about getting one of those Nike iPod gizmo things. Did you know that Nike is headquartered in Portland, Oregon (my fair city)? (OK. It’s in a suburb, but for all intents and purposes it’s in Portland). Anyhoo, a friend of mine works for Nike and could get me a discount. Should I go for it?

BTW: I’ve heard that that Eric Clapton bio is pretty interesting, but I can’t stand the guy! (Don’t tell EPI.)

The “it could be a trick” left me helpless with laughter…

Naah, it was windy, we took a bike tour on Sunday and Monday and we could definitely feel the wind :) Last night was excellent, though, really still.

Eight is also my daughter’s favorite number as she will turn 8 on 08.08.08.

Dorothy – I’m not really up on my webcam information, but occasionally I check this one, http://eyjan.is/webcam. It’s on Bankastræti and pans back and forth (showing the awful condition of Lækjartorg square after the fire last year, ugh!)

maja – I think so too.

Rozanne – No, I did not know that Nike was headquartered in Portland, what an amazing coincidence! ;)
I’m really fond of my iPod gizmo. I got it for Christmas but have only started using it because I don’t have the Nike shoes. I prefer Asics for running, and only recently tried sticking the sensor into the laces, and it works just fine (you just have to make sure it doesn’t fall out). It’s fun to keep track and to get Paula Radcliffe and/or Lance Armstrong congratulating you on personal bests and such [yep] but for me the novelty sort of wore off quickly because I generally run about the same distance, so the record is always about the same. Still – I use it for long walks, and I’m sure it’s great for hiking!
Oh, and don’t worry, I’ll make sure I keep your EC dislike from EPI. UPDATE! – I went out for a run today and found that my gizmo DIDN’T measure the distance accurately, perhaps because of its inaccurate positioning inside the laces. Don’t know. In any case, it’s great, but I can’t speak for how accurate it is without the Nike shoes.

Teri – tee hee.

Hildigunnur – ok ok. Maybe it was. Still, I pictured tents flying, campers blown off the road, that sort of thing. But then I may have just picked up some unsubstantiated rumour.

Louise – cool!!

First time commenter, long time reader. Took a trip to Skagafjörður this weekend, in northern Iceland, and came back to Reykjavík yesterday. The trip back was delightful, the sun was shining and a complete still. All though the sun got blocked by some clouds when I arrived to Reykjavik I was in awesome mood throughout the day. If you look closely you can see it in Nicelanders faces that the summer is just around the corner.

There’s a pretty good list of webcams (some not in Iceland) at <a href=”http://www.ismennt.is/not/valli/Vefbanki/vefmyndavelar.html”>http://www.ismennt.is/not/valli/Vefbanki/vefmyndavelar.html. The one at http://www.portusgroup.is/vefmyndavel is aimed at the construction site of the new Tónlistarhúsið (when it’s working). And the weather cams at http://www.vedur.is/vedur/athuganir/vefmyndavelar/reykjavik/ let us share Alda’s joy/pain in Iceland’s weather.

And I wish this blog software had a preview function… :-/

Jon May 13, 2008 at 5:54 pm

I like EPI’s thinking on this one.

alda May 13, 2008 at 7:20 pm

Ægir – hæ og velkominn! I also went out last night at around midnight and it was absolutely beautiful. So still! I could happily have stayed out for a couple of hours.

tk – thanks for the links. Yes – no preview. Perhaps there is a way to add that function – I’m learning so many new things these days!

Jon – yes, but where’s the trust!? ;)

Colin May 13, 2008 at 8:16 pm

Maybe it’s not a question of trust for EPI but more just wanting to keep a good thing going. Plus, it’s not like you both rushed into getting married in the first place.

I had been trying to think of something clever to say about Eric Clapton but I started thinking about his music and then it all got a bit mu… zzzzz ….zzzzz …..zzzzzz

andrea May 13, 2008 at 8:38 pm

Though we weren’t married on July 7th, we were at a resort last year for our anniversary on 07/07/07. The place was packed with weddings happening. Vancouver, with its large Asian community, was booked up on 07/07/07 for almost years in advance. Have fun on 08/08/08. I can’t think of anything I’d rather do on such a lucky day than go to a concert.

alda May 13, 2008 at 10:01 pm

Colin – I know I know. If trust had been an issue, he never would have said that. He was just being funny – as I was trying to be!
Oh, and I hope I didn’t rouse you from your slumber. :)

andrea,
We also celebrated our wedding anniversary on 07.07.07 ! Actually we threw our de facto wedding party then, since we’d eloped the previous year.

And for the record, everyone – we got married on 08.07.06, which is also a pretty cool number!

Bluegrass Mama May 13, 2008 at 10:02 pm

Oh, I am coveting those tickets something fierce! Eric Clapton is probably #1 on my list of people I’d like to see in concert but never have had a chance.

alda May 13, 2008 at 11:28 pm

Cat – I’ll write a post so you can live vicariously through me!
