The mystery of the Flickr disk explained, sort of

by alda on May 1, 2008

The picture of the menu disk I posted to Flickr 10 days ago has now been viewed 3,329 times. Crazy!!

One of the most puzzling things was that in the first few days there were, according to Site Meter, significantly fewer visitors to this site than to the Flickr photo. Yet the Flickr stats showed that around 94% of the hits were coming from the Weather Report. This had YT scratching her head in wonder, as some of you may recall. Where were all those viewers coming from, and why were they not registering on this site?

Well. I have since learned about a neat little feature offered by my ISP, namely the most accurate stats available for my site, which are registered by the server on which the site is hosted, as opposed to by a remote counter*. It counts hits to all the different pages, as well as ‘other’ content accessed on my site [whatever that may be] and provides stats for ‘hits’ and ‘visitors’ and ‘page views’and ‘fleeting glances’ and ‘rude googlies’ and ‘bizarre hits to Flickr’ [KIDDING!] and all sorts of other things I never would have had the imagination to even wonder about. And the bottom line is that – are you ready? – this site is receiving about 120% more visitors than I realized. 120 fricking percent! And here I thought I had enough pönnukökur and coffee for everyone, and meanwhile there were all these invisible lurkers who came and saw and realized there was nothing left for them so they left again. I’M A TERRIBLE HOSTESS!!

But who knew, right? Certainly not YT, and I would have surely continued on in unmitigated oblivion had it not been for EPI’s Flickr disk, which unwittingly exposed the big secret. However, it still does not explain why 3,329 people found a CD decorated with a bunch of rubber duckies and a menu written in garbled Icelandic so fascinating. The mystery lives on.

TODAY WAS LABOUR DAY OVER HERE

And it started off beautiful, with clear skies, brilliant sunshine and – most importantly – no wind. EPI got busy cleaning off the terrace and shining up the barbecue after a long hard winter, while YT was the picture of feminine domesticity and stayed in the kitchen baking muffins. [Barf.] [Not the muffins, they were good.] Meanwhile, last night around 1 am we both stood and looked out of the window and marvelled at the tiny semblance of midnight sun in the western sky. It was the middle of the night, and behold! there was light in the sky. ~ This happens every year, and every year we are equally amazed, as if we’re seeing it for the first time. Right now 4°C [39F] and sunrise was at 4.59 [but it was light at 1, Honest!] and sunset at 9.53.

Mmm… Pönnukökur…

How often do you hear of a “CD decorated with a bunch of rubber duckies and a menu written in garbled Icelandic”? Just this once, that’s how often. And it’s just rare enough to make you the Queen of the Mysterious Flickr Visits. Heck, even I went and took a look. :-)

I rubber necked! I admit it. I just couldn’t stop myself. I had to see the menu that could be served and then shoved aside, along with the table, to make room for dancing ;-) It’s very cool that your ISP allows you to see such a detailed report too. I could see how that would be beneficial for a commercial site.

Hildigunnur, yeh. Feels a little like winning the lotto. :)

Chris, heheh. Quite.

Keera, QMFV for short. Like it. ;)

Gary, so I guess you were not one of the previous 3,329 then?

I wasn’t one of the previous 3,329 either, I have been crazy busy. It’s very clever with the rubber duckies and the duck meal theme.

I still want to get to the bottom of this CD thing! So mystifying!

That’s great that you can see the midnight sun. It’s been so cold here, I still think that it’s winter, but it’s staying light pretty long here, too. Hard to believe it’s already May.

BTW: I’d love to see a photo of that midnight sun the next time you happen to see it. Is it something that can be photographed? Just think of all the Flickr hits it might get!

Rebecca, you caught that, huh? :)

Rozanne, have I never posted a pic of the midnight sun?? Surely I have! – just go to my Flickr stream and search for ‘midnight’ and you’ll get quite a few pics up! One of the header images, too – with a bird perched on a pole – was taken at midnight.

Hello Alda. I had seen the bird on a pole on a previous visit, but I refreshed until I got him again. A lovely picture, made even more interesting now I know it was taken at Midnight.
