We had an earthquake this evening that measured 4.7 on the Richter scale, ONE YEAR TO THE DAY from the last big earthquake!!
How’s THAT for a bizarre coincidence?
I didn’t feel it, though. EPI and I were in the kitchen making dinner – very late because EPI had been putting up new blinds in the kitchen and it took about two hours longer than expected, so we [well, YT] were absolutely faint with hunger and kind of, you know, spaced out. AAH came barging out of her room: DID YOU FEEL THAT? DID YOU FEEL IT? WE JUST HAD AN EARTHQUAKE! and I was, like, “Girrl, you ‘magining things.” And AAH was, like, “No, everything in my room was shaking, the table and the computer and …” and EPI was, like, “Is there a big truck idling out on the street or something making things shake in your room”, and I’m like, “No, EPI, if there was a truck out there it wouldn’t just make things shake in her room, they’d shake in here, too,” and he’s like, “True,” and I’m like, “Well nothing rattled in here,” and thought, ‘that girrl’s got some overactive imagination.”
And, boy, did I feel stupid when I saw the news.
Anywayz, no harm done, nobody hurt and no reported damage. The epicenter was about 8 km north of Grindavík [Blue Lagoon area], which is about, oh, 40 km from here. And there have been lots of wee aftershocks.
Just thought you might like to know.

That’s the fun kind of earthquake–something for everyone to talk about, but nobody’s hurt!
I remember last year’s. Glad you are all safe!!!
Cat – exactly!!
Shannon – thanks.
For two days the activity will be visible on vedur.is
California style we go…em… is that one? That it? Over? Bigger one coming? Should I feel scared? Um… yep that was one, not bad, whew. Deep breath.
Ann
what!? around what time? i totally didn’t feel it either.
After the earthquake last year I found a number of new fumaroles and mud holes in the Hveragerði thermal area. If this kind of thing is developing right under your house, it might be less than fun.
And I suppose, the Blue Lagoon is once again going to increase their rates, because now they can boast about having a wave pool.
Glad it wasn’t a damaging one.
Exactly one year to the day is odd.
Thanks, everyone!
rx – it was around 8.30 or 9 pm. Somewhere around there.
something seems a bit off at the forum …
Elín – thanks for the heads-up. Forum spam … it sure takes a lot of dedication to actually register, confirm email address etc. just so you can spam a forum that doesn’t even get all that much traffic!
We always talked about earthquake season in California. Geologists would say it ain’t so, but the folk evidence is pretty overwhelming.
Elín and all,
After having to clear out a few more spam sprees, we decided to enable a moderation queue.
For the people who already posted before nothing will change, but the first time posters will have to wait till someone approves their message.
Pretty much how Alda works with the comments for the blog.
All this should mean next to zero spam on the forum (can’t imagine a spam bot first making a normal message, just later to spam the forum) and less work for us to clean up the mess.
But of course, we might change our mind again later
Geologists measured Susan Boyle losing Britain’s Got Talent on Saturday as 9.3 on the Richter scale, ie “devastating in areas several thousand miles across”…
So will May 29 become “Earthquake Day”?
It wasn’t our fault this time! We were home in Canada this year. Last year’s quake was pretty memorable ‘though…….
We’re coming over in July ‘though.
Glad everyone’s OK.
