Last weekend on the way home from the Gay Pride parade EPI and I ran into a couple of friends, who are currently awaiting a baby. On chatting about the pregnancy and whatnot my friend Bergljót remarked how it seemed to her that every other woman in Iceland is pregnant these days … and – on reflection – I had to concur. Ever since then, I’ve noticed that there are a remarkable number of women in Reykjavík heavily pregnant.* It’s quite amazing!
I think it must have to do with the kreppa. Think about it: it’s now nine months since everything came crashing down. And on reading back some of the old posts this evening, I found myself transported back to last October and the enormity of feelings and emotions that were running so high at that crazy time. I think many, many of us must have sought solace in love and sex and all that good stuff.
So, people, I think it’s official: WE HAVE A KREPPABOOM!
UPDATE: I open my Fréttablaðið this morning, and what do I see? A report stating that there will be a record number of births in Iceland this year. I rest my case!
A RAVISHING EVENING
EPI came home around 10:30 and before he was even halfway through the door announced that he was going back out and would I like to join him? The weather was divine. I needed no encouragement, pulled on a sweater and we headed out … turned the corner and OH! The sunset in the west end of town was exquisite – the sky a blazing rose tapering off to the purest blue, and the Snæfellsnes peninsula perfectly silhouetted against the sky. The sea shimmered iridescent blue. So gorgeous. For a moment I found myself wishing I’d brought my camera but immediately dismissed the thought – there was just no way to capture the scene. There were loads of people down there, walking or running or biking along the waterfront, and everyone in a buoyant mood. August is such a great month for sunsets and amazing colours of the sky. Right now we have temps of 11°C [52F], with the sun coming up at 5:02 am, setting at 10:02 pm.
* Including my eldest stepdaughter. So exciting!
