News overkill

by alda on February 5, 2010

Oh, man. I am so sick and tired of all the stuff going down here these days.

I don’t want to try to make sense of it, or think about it, or hear about it, or wonder about it.

This weekend I’m going to help AAH paint her room, I’m gonna go to the gym and run on the treadmill and then soak in the hot tub and look up at the sky. On Sunday I’m going to my dad’s for afternoon coffee to hang out with him and his wife and my siblings and their families. And maybe I’ll take a walk along the seashore.

I’m not going to think about Icesave, or fricking Hagar, or Jóhanna pandering to the EU, or all the homes about to go into foreclosure, or all the people out of work, or any of that other crap.

Oh, and the weather is cool and pretty and there’s hardly any wind. No snow, though. Temps -1°C [30F]. The sun came up at 9.56 am and set at 5.28. The day is becoming discernibly longer and that is SO good.

Look on the bright side. At least your country did not just budget 9 billion dollars to freshen up your nuclear weapons stockpile. Sounds like you have a good plan to take care of your self. Stick to your plan!

Hey Alda- there is no sense in trying to make sense of the nonsensical. It’s a pretty nice night here in the North West of England too. I’ve just stood in the middle of the garden and looked up at the stars and thought if you are in your hot tub you might be doing the same thing right now and we common people have more things that bind us together than separate. Now that’s something to celebrate on a February Saturday night!

I think you have planned out a most excellent weekend. Enjoy!

Walking along the seashore sounds very depressing and very Scandinavian, a bit like some Ingmar Bergman film.

Sleep is a good cure-all , specially for ‘news overkill’ and other things that make you fed up. I plan on sleeping until my toddler wakes me up by poking me in the eye and trying to lift my eyelids (he does this every w/e as he wakes up early). I’d rather sleep-in than meet my family ;)

May you have a wonderful, relaxing weekend! Thanks for all the information and perspective that you provide here.

I can’t think of a better recipe.

“soak in the hot tub and look up at the sky”

Sounds relaxing. A pity there’s no culture of outdoor hot tubs in London…

I hope you have a lovely weekend Alda, and just to let you know it’s actually really nice to read about your real life!

After all, your weather in Iceland seems to be far better than our’s in Germany.

When our current grey and cold weather or bad news are getting on my nerves, I just start planning our summer holiday in Iceland – it always works. :)

Saturday morning. Did you get wrinkles in the hot tub!??? If yes, it sounds good- you were obviously looking up at the stars for a long long time.

@kevin of Emerald Isle: I am sorry if I offended you. I try to cheer people up and see what happens. On a more serious note, I read tj99′s post on the forum about the need to vote down the referendum’s debt and I agree that this is a ‘national crisis’ which has international implications.

Good for you Alda !

To tend ones own garden and to refresh oneself is what we all need.

Here is a little something from the USA not Iceland, not related exactly to Icesave or anything much there directly.

David Stockman a Ronald Regan economic official has said that the policy they took was a serious error. Now this is interesting why? Well because today’s Republican leaders in the USA are still advocating the Reagan doctrine of starving government through tax cuts, so as to stop spending. It did not work and never will.

What is really cool though, is that people today will be more than happy to vote against their own interests because they do not want to have anything explained to them. They know everything already. This is odd since David Stockman is one of the originators of the ideas that they hold and take for their own today.

If people will not listen to anything except their own best loved ideas, reality will have no effect on their thinking …then what?

Now in the way that this indirectly is similar to Iceland’s current conditions is purely accidental. People all over the world do not want to change or evaluate anything and make changes as everyone is so smart and capable and this is of course the best of all possible worlds.

Candide the hero of Voltaire’s book of that name, after many adventures went home and tended to his own garden also. Having been exposed to a parade of mad ideas and travel to insane lands ruled by leaders ever more mad and misguided.

Things never change! But perhaps it is time they must.

Have a nice day Alda! Tomorrow also and on.

Aw, Tom Thumb, you did a good job (I can tell you’re an American like me) trying to cheer everyone up.

On a brighter note, here in Washington state we have just come off the warmest January on record and tomorrow is the silly Super Bowl.

Alda, you hve done a great job keeping us informed; don’t know how you do it. You should take the weekend off and just “smell the flowers” as they say.

Kreppa overload I am exhausted here in Ireland ha ha, what must it be like in Iceland. !!!

kevin o'connor waterford Ireland February 7, 2010 at 11:03 am

@tom thumb no you did not offend me at all, it was just another of my insane posts I do, the point being to contrast Icesave with the amounts wasted on the war in Iraq, that tied in nicely with your comment about the 9 bill on nukes.

Moose Drool February 7, 2010 at 3:31 pm

Enjoy it Alda!

On day two of digging out from our snow storm here in the Washington DC area.

(My muscles sure could use a soak in that hot tub.)

tj3: That reminds me of some friends that traveled around the world. Most of their thoughts on other cultures centered around determining whether or not the culture was better or worse than the US culture. Africa no middle class, Vietnam bad roads, Europe a US culture in a museum, etc. Each time the US came out on top, funny that!
This came out in our discussions on Thomas Friedman and his (in my opinion) vile philosophies. They fully supported the idea that a superior civilization had the right to impose its ways on an inferior civilization even if it meant violence.
In the US we get (or used to) all the benefits of killing people abroad and stealing their property. People like Friedman help us feel better when buying Nike shoes or cheap oil or other products made from slave labor in China, Sri Lanka, Honduras, Haiti, etc.
Saying ‘no’ to a new pair of shoes may be a better plan to save the world that the UN nonsense (just a thought greeny-weenies).
But to their credit, they did travel around the world. More than I can say.

Rebecca February 8, 2010 at 5:24 pm

But you left out the important news… what colour are you painting it? ;)

alda February 9, 2010 at 11:41 am

Thanks for the kind words, everyone! I must say I did less staring at the sky last weekend than staring at the walls in AAH’s room. :)

Rebecca – it was red and white, it is now white with one wall covered in black patterned wallpaper. That wallpaper job almost killed EPI and me.
