The girl in the silly glasses

by alda on February 3, 2010

OK, so after weeks of stalling, we finally bit the bullet this evening and went to see Avatar.

I wasn’t dying to go. I have this natural aversion to anything vaguely resembling a Hollywood blockbuster, well, unless it has Clint Eastwood in it. Because if Clint Eastwood has even breathed on it, it will automatically ooze coolness. And blue people running barefoot around in some bizarre forest somewhere just didn’t sound cool.

Plus I’d heard all this talk about The Moral and The Message and I just thought, ugh, another Hollywood melodrama trying to ram an overly simplified world-view down my throat.

Call me a cynic, if you will if you shall if you must.

But then everyone kept going on about it and ooh, the 3D thing, and wow.

The verdict? An excellent time. The blue people were actually OK, the forest rocked and even the obligatory Hollywood battle scene totally held my attention. It even managed to get The Message across without being totally nauseating. And within ten minutes I’d totally forgotten about those silly glasses on my nose.

Plus the graphics and technology and 3D and everything were outstanding. There’s no other word.

Avatar[Couldn't resist snapping a photo of EPI and Ragnheiður with my phone. Those glasses were just too priceless.]

My sentiments exactly. It was really more an experience than a movie and not something I’d ever watch on my laptop!

Science fiction is supposed to be about the sense of wonder, and Avatar provided that as well as anything since the Golden Age.

I must say that for the annual budget of such country like Haiti I would expect something way much better. No matter how you call me :-)
But marketing was fantastish!

I thought it was a great film – and I only saw the normal 2-D version. (I have bad eyes and the 3-D would give serious eye-ache). How’s the Icelandic film scene at the moment? You mentioned the documentary type films previously about the kreppa, but what else Icelandic is currently on? And by the way – are Icelandic films profitable!?

Glad you liked it. I’ve seen it twice myself and still liked it the second time :) The glasses were slightly annoying, but didn’t bother too much and totally worth it for the 3d effect. Although noticed it does matter where you sit though. Also I’m just a hopeless sci-fi/fantasy nerd so it hit the spot even if the story wasn’t anything stellar. :P

Andrew – the Icelandic film scene is in bad shape. Cutbacks in funding and RÚV has just announced that they won’t be able to support homegrown programming for the foreseeable future. Filmmakers are pretty distraught.

And no, I don’t think Icelandic films are particularly profitable.

The 3D is incredible. Maybe one day they will spend three zillion dollars on a script…

I think I’ve said it already, this film is quite impressive, but I still prefer Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings and low budget stories even more.

I am nuts for trees … SO … I LOVED this movie and it actually had some story. Where in Iceland can you find trees which are largen then yourself? You have to go to the cinema for that! :-)

The current rage at our school is for the students to break the polarization filters out and the wear just the frames. It took me a bit to figure out why so many people were walking around with oversized glasses ;)
