Eruption in Eyjafjallajökull!

by alda on March 21, 2010

So I leave the country for four days, and what happens? An eruption happens!

As I mentioned about three weeks ago, Eyjafjallajökull glacier has been threatening to erupt for a while now, but the tremors seemed to be dying down, if anything.

For those concerned that this might be near us [thanks Andrew!] — never fear, it’s about 150 km east of Reykjavík. However, they are evacuating farms in the vicinity and from what I understand they’ve also closed a large area around the eruption, including places like Vík.

RÚV has a live report with webcam shots of the eruption here.

Still in Stockholm — will try to post more later today.

As far as I see, you might have to stay in Stockholm for some more time, as they have closed down Keflavik airport.

Apparently it happened in Fimmvorduháls between the glaciers and not directly underneath the ice, so there doesn’t seem to be an imminent danger of flood.

Here is an impressive video of the eruption, taken from an helicopter:

Keflavik Airport opened at 11 am this mornng for flights, so you should be ok Alda. I am going to hire a car on Wednesday and drive out as far as I am permitted. At present there doesn’t seem to be any threat of glacial flooding. The weather here was extremely mild on Friday. A friend I met that day said this usually preceeds an eruption and she was right.

Flights have been re-scheduled. A guy in our building that had his flight cancelled was just informed that his flight will depart in the afternoon (the flight from Stockholm seems to arriving this evening). The weird thing is that I felt small earthquakes until a few days ago, then nothing more.
