Don’t discount the thrill of an Icelandic winter! If you live there I’m sure you’d welcome the light and warmth of a southern winter but I enjoyed my winter trip. Few tourists, lots of room in the pools, scenery just as stunning, the colours of the sunrise followed closely by the sunset are otherworldly. The weather is very interesting if you’re not wimpy.

And after this miserable summer in N.A. I’d give anything for Icelandic weather, winter or summer.

Just my personal opinion here, but I would gladly trade three winters in Florida, Guatemala, Mexico, Belize, or probably many other places for one summer in Iceland It is something you just can’t compare to anything else (although NZ is a possible exception since I haven’t been…. and make no mistake it is on my list!)

Of course, the ideal thing is to take more holidays so one can do both. Or just quit work after becoming independently wealthy..

For those interested in going to Iceland with Trees (aka: New Zealand) then I would check out Emrites, I think they do cheap flights via the mid-east. You can limit the cost of your flight. I’m sure its at leat 50% cheaper once you are in NZ, than staying in Iceland!!

Have a lovely time in the Westfjords! We spent 4 days hiking around Hornstrandir last weekend and it was unimaginably, staggeringly beautiful. We were incredibly lucky and had sunny blue skies. Even if you don’t get the chance to do a big hike, you can take a day trip to Hornvík – the scenery around Hornbjarg is unforgettable, and I would really recommend seeing it. Góða ferð!!

@Hildigunnur, yes New Zealand my niece went out there on the 14th July this month €1500 return airfare, I cant even afford to go to Iceland,never mind just send me a crate of that Holy Pope beer to drown my sorrows.

Michael, it’s not too bad during the winter but yes, a lot of people do just this. Go to Florida or some place rather than Oz or NZ, that’s just too expensive (I know all about that, went there in May. Still paying…)

Enjoy the West Fjords. I have been to Hornstrandir this year, unfortunately in a very windy and rainy period and therefore having to cut our hiking tour short. Nevertheless, it was awesome – apart from a boat ride in the storm. I’ll definitely have to return there one day to see what I have missed due to bad weather. And driving along Isafjarðardjúp is wonderfully relaxing.
