Bear number three??

See, I had to write that last post, just so I could keep writing about the polar bears, because of the promise I made at the very end of the post before that, and I never break a promise.

There were some people out touring today, in a place called Hveravellir, which is up north but quite a distance inland. These people claim they saw bear tracks, plain as day. According to police in Blönduós, these people seemed very credible even if they were foreigners [kidding!] [no, really!] and drew a picture of the tracks that – gasp! – looked absolutely like the genuine article.

[Aside: why didn’t they take a picture? Whoever heard of tourists who don’t carry a camera??]

Anyway, did that old man or did he not say that there would be three bears?

When you mentioned Bear #2, I immediately thought of that man and wondered when the third shoe, I mean, paw, would drop!

  • Jon June 20, 2008, 12:47 am

It could be an omen! No, probably just a bear. When backpacking in grizzly country I never slept well, but our local black bears are usually just a mild nuisance and can usually (not always!) be intimidated. I would keep a good distance between a polar bear and myself. If polar bears were in Yellowstone Park, tourists would try to feed them.

  • linguaphile June 20, 2008, 4:14 am

Never underestimate the power of a premonition! Especially from an elderly Icelandic man.

  • Rozanne June 20, 2008, 5:22 am

Unbelievable. If this keeps up you’re going to have to change the name of your blog to the Iceland Polar Bear Report.

  • PhilippeP June 20, 2008, 7:50 am

At this rate, we would soon rename Polar Bear To Icelandic Bear ….

He´s probably living in Eyvind´s cave, having a dip in the hot springs and generally enjoying the taste of cycling German tourists. The added sweating makes them juicier. One of the towns “characters” stopped me this morning and told me about this latest bear and really nothing would surprise me. I am waiting to meet one on the way to Holar one day.

Cat – well, seemingly it didn’t take long!

Jon – yes, feed them and probably try to cuddle them afterwards. Hehheh.

    linguaphile – indeed.

    Rozanne – LOL!

Philippe – or Iceland to Polarbearland …

Sigga – if you do meet one, get his autograph, will you? Tell him he’s got a huge fan base at the IWR.

Luigi – hi! Bet you don’t get many polar bears where you are …

  • luigi June 20, 2008, 2:14 pm

  • luigi June 20, 2008, 4:02 pm

You can shoot a bear for stupidity and continue to make the policeman?
alda, I believed that you were a little more civilians, obviously isolation atavistic you not to have clarity of discernment. or you just want to shoot just to have lubricated the rifle….my god there is a bear, kill immediately for prevention…crazy …

  • Keera June 21, 2008, 5:52 am

Luigi, polar bears are far more aggressive and far larger than brown bears. With brown bears you can sometimes climb a tree for safety or play dead. There are no trees in the arctic and playing dead will make you dead since polar bears also eat carrion. Simply put, polar bears and humans do not mix. The people who live on Svalbard all have to learn to handle a rifle and keep their distance. Their lives depend on it.

Alda, if the old man saw three bears and only three, then the problem will go away by itself. Good news for both humans and bears.

  • TheMonkeyMan June 23, 2008, 9:15 am

  • Ólöf Auður June 24, 2008, 3:06 pm

Wow! I’m speechless! I think a good walk is a great idea;)

  • Jónathan June 26, 2008, 2:35 pm

It is unfortunate that the bear had to be shot, but there is usually not a better solution. They come in from the drift ice hungry and mean, and they won’t hesitate to kill and eat anything they come across (including children). Maybe in the future an effort should be made to tranquilize them and take them into captivity, but this is not always an option.

Too bad I don’t have any Polar Beer in my refrigerator. When did they stop making that stuff??

  • Sarflin January 30, 2009, 12:27 pm

I lived in northern Canada for a few years ( From Edmonton Alberta) . Most people don’t know that polar bears are not afraid of humans and view them as a food supply.

So if tourists try to feed the bears, they will be the bear feed. I have seen films on them (they showed elementary school kids some truly scary movies on them as education) . A fully grown polar bear can batter it’s way through typical timber constructed house wall or door.

They can rip doors off cars, can out run most people on snow.

If you see a polar bear, go the other way! The movies did instill a healthy fear of them, which is good for kids to have when it comes to polar bears.
