Making Iceland into a journalistic haven, redux

Remember the Iceland Modern Media Initiative — the proposed new laws to make Iceland into a haven for journalists and investigative journalism, that I wrote about back in February?

It was passed by the Icelandic parliament last night.

You know, I’m kind of amazed. I thought there would be a lot more wrangling and haggling over this, as is the general style of the Independence and Progressive parties, who often just seem to like to haggle for the sake of it.

It will be Very Interesting to see how this progresses, and what it will actually mean in practice. According to Birgitta Jónsdóttir from The Movement, it will take about a year for the laws to be fully implemented, and work is already underway at the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. The Ministry is apparently obliged to inform parliament at three-month intervals about how that is progressing.

Finally, here are two interviews again that I took with Julian Assange from WikiLeaks and Birgitta Jónsdóttir back in February, when IMMI was preparing to launch the initiative.

Congratulations. This is excellent news, both for Iceland and the world.

Well, isn’t that great! Til hamingju Ísland. 😉

Very good news indeed. In my view the media have been amongst the main culprits when it comes to recent undoings. Mainly because they sold their independence (as did politics). No reason then to celebrate tomorrow’s Independence Day?
Interestingly its MPs at Althingi working on the resurrection of the media as if they hadn’t failed the republic themselves. Remains then to be seen who will resurrect Althingi – perhaps the media (excluding Morgunbladid)!? Could cross-sector-rehabilitation be an ingredient to the main recipe ?
    Cheers,
    Michael

The new dawn could be breaking. Us interested onlookers outside Niceland are holding our breath.

So does this mean that all the great scoops of the future will first appear in the Icelandic press!?:)

Iceland could end up with a population made up of journalists!

Here’s a link to another interview with Birgitta Jónsdóttir regarding the IMMI and Wikileaks at 14:40. (I think the whole segment is worth watching)
