Of hate mail and the solstice that came and went

Well, I must be hitting the big leagues because I’m getting hate mail and lunatic rants.

Yay! I guess.

And while I generally have a policy of evicting anyone who comes at me or other readers of this blog with profanities and blatant disrespect, I rather think I shall let those be. Give a man a rope long enough and he’ll hang himself with it, I always say. Knock yourself out.

A couple of other things:

Graham from Scotland asked the other day whether I could post some pics taken between sundown and sunrise. I always make a point of going out at around midnight during the summer solstice every year, but I missed it this year because it came a day earlier than usual, on June 20th as opposed to the 21st, on account of the leap year. Pulled a fast one! And quite frankly I’ve been too exhausted in the last few days to head out at that time of night, with or without a camera. BUT – there is a solution in the form of the webcam they have set up eyjan.is [and probably elsewhere]. It gives the date and the local time, so log on there at any time after midnight our time and you’ll be able to see what our light nights look like.

Finally, one for the geeks in the crowd: can anyone recommend a good web host? I don’t know if any of you have noticed, but I’ve been having some trouble with mine lately, i.e. my site has been down fairly frequently and there have been a few other grrr-inducing things. The requirement is that it be reliable, affordable and have efficient and speedy customer service. Anyone??

Gorgeous weather! Sure – a bit cool, but that’s par for the course … at least most of that nasty wind has subsided. I’m working for much of the weekend [I really try not to work weekends, but in the last few weeks have had to relax that rule far more frequently than I like] but still I managed to do some work by the side of the Laugardalslaug pool yesterday, which was obviously highly preferable to being bolted to the office chair. It’s 12°C [54F] and sunrise was at 2.56 and sunset will be at 12.03. The will soon be getting shorter *sob*.

Thanks Alda, I’ll give the webcam a go.

If you are looking for a good blog host, then you can’t go wrong with Blogger.com. My own blog, (shameless plug coming up), is https://cdoberena.blogspot.com and I have had no problems in the 2 years since I started.

  • Keera June 22, 2008, 1:22 pm

Congratulations on attracting your first hate mail! (Entertaining stuff.)

Several Norwegians put me on to one.com. It’s based in Denmark, stable and cheap.

  • Sólveig June 22, 2008, 1:38 pm

Hello! I enjoy reading your blog, it always keeps in the loop of what’s a-happening in Iceland for us exiles. I have a question for you, however! You used to live in Toronto, right? Well, looks like I’ll have an 8 hour layover in Toronto on my flight from Calgary to Iceland this coming Monday (ie tomorrow) and it just occured to me that it might be enough time to actually leave the airport and do some sightseeing. Can you give me any tips on what I should spend my approximately three hours doing?
    Thanks! Sólveig

Charlotte’s site is hosted by reg123.co.uk, but don’t know if they’d host for non-UK customers. This info is possibly of no use to you whatsoever…

Re the ranting; that Luigi guy would appear to be a nutbag. Still, all very entertaining. And I wish my site would do the rotating photos thingy like yours does 🙁

  • Sonja June 22, 2008, 2:06 pm
  • andrea June 22, 2008, 2:13 pm

I was hoping Luigi would have a comment for this post, too. Maybe he’s back on his meds, though.

  • Graham from Scotland June 22, 2008, 2:20 pm

Thanks for the info, Alda. Will check it out tonight/tomorrow morning.

If it’s a blog host you’re looking for, you can’t do better than blogger.com. I’ve had my own blog for 2 years using them, and, touch wood, never had a problem.

    Shameless plug….https://cdoberena.blogspot.com

as long as he isn’t from Bergisch Gladbach … (a place I have never been to anyway, but does she care?)

  • alda June 22, 2008, 5:34 pm

Keera, alas – not my first. We’ve had some pretty heated action around here in the past (anyone remember the Texas DA?). – and thanks for the tip on the web host.

Sólveig – head down to Queen St. West and poke around the shops and galleries, or go to the Kensington Market (nearby). Those are the things I can think of off the top of my head (that don’t require a lot of time) – but perhaps other Torontonians have better suggestions? (too bad you aren’t flying Icelandair to TO, the latest in-flight mag has a great article on Toronto and what to do there).

Timbo – 123, huh? Are they any good? – and yes, the rotating photo thing is ace. One of the main reasons I fell for this template.

    sonja – takk!

andrea – look no futher than just below your comment! 🙂

Graham – actually I’ve just moved from Blogger. Also, I’m looking for a web host, not a platform, which is what Blogger, Wordpress et. al. are. (/lesson)
PS – still chuckling over Polar Nostra. 😉

Incidentally everyone – aren’t those Google translators a blast??

  • Jessie June 22, 2008, 6:35 pm

Wow, those webcams are neat. Thanks for the tip! I dream of spending a summer in Reykjavik — it sounds/looks amazing. Sorry about the troll.

  • Sigvaldi Eggertsson June 22, 2008, 7:04 pm

Alda, re. the Google translatores, don´t you think Luigi should try a different version?

  • moiraeknittoo June 22, 2008, 7:34 pm

Love the completely incomprehensible strings of “argument”. *snort*

I’ve been using dreamhost.com for quite some time. Let me know if you’d like a referral code for free setup. Super cheap, ridiculous amounts of bandwidth…I know the Harlot had issues with them, but for non-BNK (big name knitters) I think the service, the hosting and the extras (one click installs, including WordPress, among other things) are at a very reasonable rate.

  • alda June 22, 2008, 7:39 pm

    Jessie – you’re welcome!

Sigvaldi – no, absolutely not! The way he’s doing it is just perfect. Heh.

moira – cool. I’ll check them out. Do they have good uptime?

  • rockmother June 22, 2008, 11:52 pm

Google translation or not – what on earth is he going on about? How vile and mean – away to your hole back come from with madness Mr L (I wrote that in translation speak!) x

  • Alda June 23, 2008, 12:38 am

rockmother – lol! I’m starting to really like this translation language.

  • VioletSky June 23, 2008, 2:00 am

Those webcams are great. I’m trying to book a trip to England and one of the options is via Icelandair. Hmm, a tempting option, a stopover in Reykjavik.

  • Annoyed by anonhating June 23, 2008, 6:47 am

He seems to be agitated about filthy, trichinous murderous bears…

    (Don’t show him the googlies.)

  • Graham from Scotland June 23, 2008, 7:28 am

Violet Sky…..do it!!! I went to Reykjavik in April with my wife and 14 month-old daughter, and had an absolutely fantastic time. Beautiful country, and lovely people. Would recommend!

  • Jim June 23, 2008, 9:08 am

Am I the only one who’s noticed a startling similarity between the writing styles of Luigi and James Joyce? 🙂

  • mary June 23, 2008, 9:21 am

Yes to Jim’s comment, it is rather Joycean, though Joyce makes sense!

  • alda June 23, 2008, 10:31 am

VioletSky – we just had a friend over for dinner last night who did just that – flew to the UK with Icelandair and stopped here for a couple of days. Personally I think it’s an excellent option.

ABA – Good. We’re starting to speak the same language now. Slowly.

    Jim/mary – LOL!!

  • Byron June 23, 2008, 3:28 pm

(Forse Luigi è molto arrabbiato perchè la sua squadra di calcio ieri l’ha preso nei fondelli.)

  • JoeInVegas June 23, 2008, 9:21 pm

Buttercups – we need more stories of buttercups !! (thanks for the reminder Luigi)
I use catalog.com for several customers, no down time, reasonable for what we do.

  • Jon June 23, 2008, 9:26 pm

Surprised that the google translator didn’t turn the polar nostra lunacy into PANDAmonium. Sorry….couldn’t help it!

  • Jessica June 24, 2008, 10:41 pm

    best hate(?) mail ever.

seriously what in the arseing hell.
