So the campaign for next spring’s Reykjavík elections is off to a roaring start, with endless sponsored posts and pages on Facebook for this candidate or other. The election promises are already flying, too, with one Independence Party rep promising better weather in Reykjavík if he gets elected.
And lest you think this is modelled on funnyman Mayor Jón Gnarr’s “all kinds of stuff for idiots” line from last year … well, let’s just say that I don’t think the IP candidates have the imagination for that kind of rhetoric. Nope – this guy is for real, planning on delivering better weather by planting trees on the slopes of Mt. Esja and on the outskirts of town. [Though maybe he’s counting on global warming to do the job, and planning to take the credit for himself. Which would be apt, given his party’s track record in such manouverings.]
As for Jón Gnarr, the nation now waits with bated breath to learn whether or not he plans to run for a second term. Something he should be announcing between now and 12 noon. Stay tuned.
