The case of the missing smiley

So old Jón Ásgeir Jóhannesson is now on a rabid offensive, threatening to sue the Glitnir winding-up committee for libel over the charges I wrote about in the last post.

Jón Ásgeir claims the emails that have been released were all cut apart and taken out of context and – what’s worse – EDITED.

There’s a smiley missing [OMG!].

In one of the emails Jón Ásgeir pressed Lárus Welding, CEO, to close the deal and adds, “Otherwise it may be best that I take over as acting Chairman of the Board [of the bank].”

The winding-up committee suggests this might have been a veiled threat.

Jón Ásgeir claims it was a joke and accuses the winding-up committee of removing a smiley that was attached to the end.

In his view, it’s all a conspiracy against him, designed to kill his reputation and carefully timed to coincide with the release of the Black Report on Monday.

We’ve heard it all before. Countless times. However, in the past there was a singular enemy – Davíð Oddsson – that Jón Ásgeir could blame for everything. But now? Surely Doddsson is not pulling the strings of the winding-up committee? [NB – I wouldn’t put anything past Doddsson, but this seems a LITTLE far-fetched].

“threatening to sue the Glitnir winding-up committee for libel”
lol. There is a choice phrase over here in the UK, called ‘p-ssing in the wind’. He really shouldn’t threaten to sue anyone, suprised he isn’t keeping his mouth shut and concentrating on his own defence.

I know why the smiley is missig .. its moved to Norway a while back.. See here: http://baggalutur.is/frettir.php?id=4878

No wonder he moved, beeing abused by Jón Ásgeir is not a simple matter for even the taughest.

I agree with Mr Lewis. JA is full of it as I presume Schillings would want cash in advance before pursuing a libel action in the UK.

The question might be, if the Glitnir Committe action succeds in an Icelandic court, is it enforceable outside Iceland. If not, then this may be posturing by people who have to shoe some results.

I guess, dubbing a threat as “veiled” always means that it can be read either way – with or without smiley. This defense appears pretty weak and childish – or did I just miss the notional smiley behind JÁJ’s claim?

And then again Nothing will happen to this guys, they will keep on doing “bussiness” as usual and free as a birds, From my point of view this is just one more stunt, so people feel like “finally some heads will roll”. I might be wrong dough.

    The Baggalútur newsflash:
So-called smiley, or 🙂 to many has moved to Norway along with his wife and eight children.

He simply says he has had enaugh of Iceland and hopes to be able to establich himself quicly in the cheerful and positive community of Norway.

“It’s just that you have to make a living”, says the sad smiley who has been severly hit by the economic crisis. “There is less to do for me every day – only an odd use for me at some womens chatrooms. Other than that its just over. ”

(No mention of the Glitnir email though.. Gunnar :þ)

Is Jón Ásgeir actually still in Iceland or has he buggered off somewhere else and hoping the Icelandic authorities won’t request his extradition?

  • alda April 9, 2010, 2:06 pm

Mike Richards – see previous post.

Gunnar – thanks for the translation. Baggalútur rocks! 🙂 -> hey, it’s the missing smiley!

JA was out and about in London
Mandarke – The collapse of his group Baugur has not apparently cramped the style of Jon Jóhannesson. Mandrake spotted the Icelandic businessman downing a few drinks with his wife, Ingibjorg Palmadottir, at the Suka restaurant in the Sanderson hotel in the West End. There was much jolly Icelandic banter and the pair seemed not to have a care in the world.

And… Doddsson has left the country (http://www.visir.is/article/20100409/FRETTIR01/975480405).

Eh, something to do with the SIC report coming out on Monday? 🙂

For want of a smiley the war was lost . . .

C’mon, a sarcasm defence would need evidence of a wink – not a smiley!
