When I received the event invitation via Facebook I thought it was a joke, but apparently it’s not. There’s something on this evening called Freedom Dinner, held to commemorate the 5-year anniversary of the meltdown. The keynote speaker is … [wait for it] … Davíð Oddsson.
Yes, that Davíð Oddsson. Disgraced ex-Central Bank director, and arguably the foremost architect of the meltdown. The Davíð Oddsson whose arrogant propriety of Icelandic society earned him the moniker King Davíð. Who accepts no blame whatsoever, but sits at his post editing one of Iceland’s main daily newspapers, rewriting history, and putting quotation marks around the word “meltdown” whenever he must write about it.
The event is presented by an institution called Research Centre for Innovation and Economic Growth, and follows a conference held today on the banking collapse and small states in Europe. I know nothing about this Research Centre, but my money is on it being populated by Independence Party
To many of us, just the name “Davíð Oddsson” elevated onto some “freedom” plane is utterly ludicrous. However, it probably shows more than anything that his
disciples followers supporters are just as blind and in denial as they ever were. Which shouldn’t really come as a surprise, since Doddsson has this knack for convincing even the most avowed sceptic that white is black, and black is white.
Incidentally, the event is followed by a dinner in which a lucky few got a chance to pony up ISK 30,000 to sup with Doddsson Himself. Needless to say, it was sold out.
