The Freedom Dinner with Davíð Oddsson

When I received the event invitation via Facebook I thought it was a joke, but apparently it’s not. There’s something on this evening called Freedom Dinner, held to commemorate the 5-year anniversary of the meltdown. The keynote speaker is … [wait for it] … Davíð Oddsson.

Yes, that Davíð Oddsson. Disgraced ex-Central Bank director, and arguably the foremost architect of the meltdown. The Davíð Oddsson whose arrogant propriety of Icelandic society earned him the moniker King Davíð. Who accepts no blame whatsoever, but sits at his post editing one of Iceland’s main daily newspapers, rewriting history, and putting quotation marks around the word “meltdown” whenever he must write about it.

DoddssonThe event is presented by an institution called Research Centre for Innovation and Economic Growth, and follows a conference held today on the banking collapse and small states in Europe. I know nothing about this Research Centre, but my money is on it being populated by Independence Party zealots members.

To many of us, just the name “Davíð Oddsson” elevated onto some “freedom” plane is utterly ludicrous. However, it probably shows more than anything that his disciples followers supporters are just as blind and in denial as they ever were. Which shouldn’t really come as a surprise, since Doddsson has this knack for convincing even the most avowed sceptic that white is black, and black is white.

Incidentally, the event is followed by a dinner in which a lucky few got a chance to pony up ISK 30,000 to sup with Doddsson Himself. Needless to say, it was sold out.

    It really *really* bothers me that the Icelandic ruling parties seem to have gone to some US Republican Workshop on How to Behave to Get Your Way. They’re using words such as FREEDOM!!, PATRIOT!!, “You’re either with us or against us”-isms, and creating THINK TANKS and what not.

    Soon the think-tankers will be seriously quoted by the news people who love a convenient sound bite, and oh, hello talking points.

    I don’t like where this is going one bit.

    So how come you got an invite? Anyone who has ever been on the internet would know that this was something that you would avoid and if you did get an invite – write about it?

    @Hrefna – totally, totally agree.

    @Sigga – it was just one of those Facebook event invitations … nothing official. You know, where people invite all their friends in one go.

    I’m with Hrefna (along with imploring to the powers of the universe to MAKE IT STOP!) As for Sigga’s questions… either they’re just remarkably ignorant of Alda, or they think they can “convert” her to thinking they’re so wonderful. I’ve met many ultra-conservatives here (the States) who are baffled how “someone as intelligent as you can’t see how right we are.” It’s like trying to talk to flubber. But in this case, I think it’s just ARROGANCE on the part of King D. and others. “We hornswoggled those folks into voting us back into power, we can do ANYTHING!”

    I wish I remembered who invited me now …

    I got told that the aforementioned Research Centre at least doesn’t have one whit to do with the University, even though the event is being held on their premises.

    Brilliant! The Atlas Shruggs! Am envious as they know what they’re doing! Imagine: under the umbrella of RNH (“Free People and Free Markets”) the spirits of Hayek, Friedman, von Mises, Reagan, Thatcher etal gather to toast fascistic Ayn Rand while enjoying a Freedom Dinner at Harpa (still indebted?), and Icelandic academics deliver the substantive substance: theorising why the Invisible Hand is actually visible! (You heard me right! Only smart asses argue its invisible because it doesn’t exist !) Cheers.
    Ps. Sorry to hear the dinner was sold out. Try the next one next month in NY. Same price unless you want it VIP at mere thousand bucks.
    PPs. And whats in it for the rest of us? One prediction goes like this: the progressives will regress , the independents progress, and, bang, His Majesty will be back as he owes it to his wounded ego and legacy! Mark my words!
